The Power of Our Myth
Mythologies, or cultural narratives, form the basis for how we view our place in the world. Religious and scientific views of the world need not conflict in all matters, but the ongoing push for inclusion of creationism and intelligent design in biology classrooms is partially a manifestation of unnecessary conflict between mythological viewpoints. The pursuit of knowledge in general is more than the simple acquisition of information, for we share information through narratives and must always be mindful of the stories we tell. (J.D. Haqq-Misra, Astrobiology 7:712-713, 2007)
Piracy as a Preventor of Tropical Cyclones
Recent hurricane seasons have been characterized by intense and frequent tropical cyclones. One contributor is increased sea-surface temperature, which is caused by decreased upwelling of cold deep-ocean water. We demonstrate that decreased pirate activity results in less upwelling. This suggests that the only viable solution to intense tropical cyclones is to increase pirate activity. (J.D. Haqq-Misra and M.B. Larson, in The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, B. Henderson, Villard, New York, pp.149-153, 2006)
